Burton P. Drayer, MD, FACR is the Executive Vice President for Risks, The Mount Sinai Medical Center, and the Dr. Charles M. and Marilyn Newman Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiology (1995 - present), Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Additionally from 2003 to 2008, Dr. Drayer served as President, The Mount Sinai Hospital and Executive Vice President for Hospital and Clinical Affairs, The Mount Sinai Medical Center. He completed his internship and neurology residency at the University of Vermont and then a radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Health Center. Dr. Drayer served as Associate Professor and Professor of Radiology at Duke University from 1979 to 1986 where he was also Director of Neuroradiology. In 1986, he joined the Barrow Neurological Institute as Director of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Research.

Internationally known for his research on the aging brain and neurodegenerative disorders, brain infarction and MR angiography, multiple sclerosis, and functional brain imaging, Dr. Drayer has over 200 publications in major journals and books. He is on many editorial boards and was the Editor of Neuroimaging Clinics of North America from 1990 to 2005. Dr. Drayer is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Neurology and the American College of Radiology, serving on the Board of Chancellors of the latter. He is a past President of the American Society of Neuroradiology, and past Chairman of the Research Foundation of the ASNR as well as a former President of the New York Roentgen Society.

In 2003, Dr. Drayer was elected to the Board of Directors of the RSNA and in 2009 ascended to Chairman of the Board, 2010 President elect, and 2011 RSNA President.

 

The Academy of Radiology Research is an alliance of 26 professional imaging societies. Established in 1995, the Academy was the catalyst for creating the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), for supporting its growth and development, for accelerating investment in vital imaging research areas by other NIH institutes, and for building support for radiology and imaging in Congress and the Executive Branch. The Academy also compiles data on imaging research, such as NIH rankings of grants to Radiology departments.
