Joseph K.T. Lee, M.D was born in China and received his M.D. degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1973. Dr. Lee served a Medicine internship at Washington University Affiliated Hospitals and a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University School of Medicine. In 1977, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology, and was named a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1988. After completion of his residency, Dr. Lee joined the staff at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, achieving the rank of Professor of Radiology in 1986. During his tenure at Mallinckrodt, he was known as a tireless and prolific clinical and scientific researcher, devoted teacher and outstanding clinician. He served as the Co-Director of the Computed Body Tomography section from 1982 - 1988. In Jan 2007, Dr. Lee stepped down as Chair of the Department and now serves as J H Scatliff Distinguished Professor of Radiology.
Abdominal imaging has been Dr. Lee's primary professional interest throughout his career as a radiologist, first as a pioneer in the field of computed body tomography and more recently, as an innovator in the application of magnetic resonance imaging. Lee has been the principal investigator for a number of research studies and has authored over 160 scientific papers and 31 book chapters. He has authored and edited 7 books, including the landmark, Computed Body Tomography (published by Raven Press in 1982), which brought the techniques and findings of Body CT to all practicing radiologists. His latest book, Computed Body Tomography with MRI Correlation, fourth edition, was published by Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins in early 2006. He has participated in numerous CME courses around the world, teaching thousands of radiologists the applications of body CT and MRI.
Dr. Lee is a member of many professional societies. He has been President of the Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging and of the Society of Chairman of Academic Radiology. He currently serves as President-Elect and a member of the Executive Committee of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the oldest professional radiological society in North America with over 19,000 members. He is also a member of the Board of Chancellors and Executive Committee of the American College of Radiology.
