Education:
A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1980, Dr. Spies completed his postgraduate training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of California/San Francisco.
Achievements:
Dr. Spies is a member of numerous professional societies and has served on over 2 dozen national committees for a variety of national radiologic organizations.

Dr. Spies is Professor of Radiology at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Chair and Chief of Service of the Department of Radiology at Georgetown University Hospital. A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1980, he completed his postgraduate training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of California/San Francisco, followed by a fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at New York University. He recently completed a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, with a concentration in epidemiology and clinical trials. Dr. Spies then served in the United States Air Force for four years, rising to the rank of major. During three of his four years in the service, he was Chief of Interventional Radiology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, which was the primary teaching hospital in the Air Force at the time. In 1989, following his military service, he was in private practice radiology for several years in both California and Washington, DC.
He joined the faculty of the Department of Radiology at Georgetown University in 1997 and he was appointed Vice Chair of the Department. He also served as Chief of Interventional Radiology from 1999-2001. In 2002, he assumed the position of Chief of Service of the Department of Radiology at Georgetown University Hospital and was appointed Chairman of Radiology in 2005. He maintains an active clinical practice as an attending radiologist in the Interventional Radiology Section. He was promoted to Professor of Radiology in 2003.
Since Dr. Spies' initial appointment to the faculty at Georgetown University, his primary research interest has been uterine artery embolization for fibroids. He is recognized as an international authority on the procedure and he has built one of the largest academic clinical and research uterine embolization programs in the country. Dr. Spies is a member of numerous professional societies and has served on over 2 dozen national committees for a variety of national radiologic organizations. Dr. Spies has been active as reviewer of numerous radiology and gynecology journals and also has served on study sections for the NIH and for other research organizations.
