Ella A. Kazerooni, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.R. / American Roentgen Ray Society
Ella A. Kazerooni, M.D., M.S.,F.A.C.R., is a Professor of Radiology, and serves as the Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs, and the Division Director for Cardiothoracic Radiology at the University of Michigan Health System. She is currently a Trustee of the American Board of Radiology, and is the immediate past chair of the Committee on Chest Imaging for the American College of Radiology Commission on Body Imaging. She has served many roles in organized radiology, including as president of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Association of University Radiologists, the Society of Thoracic Radiology, and the Radiology Alliance for Health Services Research in Radiology, member of the American College of Radiology Board of Chancellors, and is an elected member of the Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance.
Highlights of her past awards include having received the gold medal from the Association of University Radiologists, the Madame Curie Award from the American Association of Women Radiologists, and the Early Distinguished Career Award from the University of Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society.
With a Master’s degree in Clinical Research Design & Statistical Analysis, her research focuses on the development and evaluation of advanced imaging technologies as applied to diseases of the heart and lungs. This includes evaluating technologies at several levels of the technology assessment hierarchy, from safety to validity and reliability, reader agreement and impact on medical decision making. Specific areas of research include lung cancer screening, and the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease, pulmonary embolism, thoracic trauma, interstitial and obstructive lung diseases. She was the institutional P.I. for the NIH/NCI National Lung Screening Trial, and a co-investigator on numerous NIH funded grants, including the COPDGene study, Spiromics, PIOPED II and III, the Lung Imaging Database Consortium (LIDC), and the Reference Image Database to Evaluate Response (RIDER) to therapy in lung cancer and the Imaging Database Resources Initiative (IDRI). Her expertise is sought after by professional organizations developing multispecialty guidelines, including the recently published ACCF/AHA/AATS/ACR/ASA/SCA/SCAI/SIR/STS/SVM Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Patients With Thoracic Aortic Disease and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guideline on Lung Cancer Screening.
Dr. Kazerooni enjoys collaborating with and helping junior faculty, fellows and residents develop their academic careers, is active in several career development programs, and has received both the Teacher of the Year Award and the Mentor of the Year Award from the radiology residents at the University of Michigan. She has serves as a board member of the GE-Radiology Research Academic Fellowship Program (GERRAF), and the Director of the Philips-AUR Junior Faculty Development Program, and currently co-chairs the Siemens-AUR Radiology Resident Academic Development (SARRAD) Program.
She has given over 400 invited lectures in ten countries and five continents on a variety of Thoracic and Cardiac Radiology topics, has over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, over 60 chapters and invited papers, 3 books and more than 350 peer-reviewed scientific/educational abstracts and exhibits. She has served and currently serves on numerous national committees of many professional organizations.
